Rock County Line© Christopher Jones 2010
I’ll go walking that Rock County line
This was my father’s
But it’s not mine
Now it’s a Walmart and a parking lot
The land is gone
I’m not sure what we got
Ellis Island and the railway west
Black earth homesteads in a row
Harvest plenty led to books and schools
Then the children rose to go
I’ll go walking that Rock County line
This was my mother’s
But it’s not mine
We once were farmers and now we’re not
The farms are gone
I’m not sure what we got
Football and cars were my lucky stars
Then the GM plant second shift
I hunted fished and raised a family
I guess you’d say I got my wish
So I’ll go walking that Rock County line
This was my father’s
But it’s not mine
Now it’s a Walmart and a parking lot
The land is gone
I’m not sure what we got
I heard the doctor say I’ll soon be gone
It doesn’t really matter why
I’m done with night shifts, done with grease and noise
I’ll soon belong to open sky.
So I’m out walking that Rock County line
This was my mother’s
But it’s not mine
We once were farmers and now we’re not
The farms are gone
I’m not sure what I got
